“There are a lot of refugees coming to Ireland now over thelast 10 years and there has been a good bit of racism againstthem” he says. “But I think if the children knew their ownhistory then they’d realise we have a very similar history to theAfrican people coming in who were colonised as well and are stillsuffering civil war and the effects of colonialism. Unsurprisingly then Dempsey has more than a simple orstylistic reason for his striking blend of reggae and traditionalIrish music on his fourth album To Hell r Barbados from2007. “There’s ancient links between Ireland and Jamaica” he says. “In 1650 liver Cromwell an Englishman who came to subdue theIrish rebellion he sent about 50000 Irish people over to Barbadosas slaves mostly women and children whose husbands had been killedin the war. Their legacy lives on he says in many Irish place names andsurnames in Jamaica. More recently after Bob Marley played a Dublin soccer stadiumin 1980 (when Dempsey was 5) reggae enjoyed vast popularity.
