Newgrass king Sam Bush performs in Beaver Creek
Vail Daily News C
A few nights ago the Wailers the remnants of Bob Marley’s band played at the Vilar performing the entirety of Marley’s 1977 classic “Exodus. ” And on Wednesday Texas singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett performed his eclectic stylings at the intimate venue. And though Bush is known best as a founder of the progressive wing of string music dubbed “newgrass” his interests are broad enough to include reggae and country. In fact Bush’s recent gigs have specifically included the music of Bob Marley and working as a sideman to Lovett. In the fall Bush’s band toured with an outfit called the riginal Wailers led by guitarist Al Anderson and singer Junior Marvin both former members of Marley’s band. Each night of the tour ended with the two bands joining forces for a massive tribute two drum sets two bassists banjo mandolin and more to Marley. And Bush did a short run last summer as a member of Lovett’s band; Bush jokes that his summer vacation consisted of that seven-date tour through Texas.

After Dark: The White House in Laguna Beach

f course location is a factor but many other places in Laguna Beach have come and gone during the same time period. The nightspot’s devotion to live music is certainly a factor but other live-music clubs have lived and died in the same span. And the club’s spotlight on reggae music must be considered. It’s probably a combination of factors but whatever the reasons the White House is still here. The place still offers live music seven nights a week. It still provides a place to hear reggae music (Sundays and Mondays). And it’s still in Laguna Beach.

The Humble Calf: A Conversation with Burning Spear
PopMatters IL
Burning Spear is without question of the latter ilk and his latest release Jah Is Real should appeal to fans and stands to attract new listeners. Nevertheless when people speak of Burning Spear it is usually his early work that they fondly invoke. With good reason as his third album (and masterpiece) 1975’s Marcus Garvey is correctly considered one of the absolute cornerstones of reggae music. Burning Spear spent the rest of the decade establishing his legend and the series of records that followed are all considered classics. While most of his compatriots dropped out of public consciousness due either to death or the ever-shifting whims of the public (the ‘80s were a challenging time for rock music; to be certain times were considerably more difficult for reggae) Burning Spear soldiered on releasing a steady stream of albums and seemingly never not on tour.

15 Goodbye Indie 103.1. You’ll Be Missed.
Variety CA
Indie took a festival approach to music that by offering a hundred different songs by almost a hundred different artists a crowd would form and stay tuned in even if not all the music was immediately appreciated. They were a much-needed alternative to the unlistenable KRQ a wasteland of overly aggressive rock in which each tune is indistinguishable from the next. Indie attempted to connect the dots between reggae the Clash and Vampire Weekend position Tegan and Sara asvital as the Pretenders and use U2 Nirvana and the Ramones as a hook for listeners unfamiliar with the current landscape. It worked as a listening experience and an education. It's a bit saddening that their closing statement on their website would take shots at Britney and Puffy. That's not really the enemy. It's the novelty tunes the "I Kissed a Girl" and Pussycat Dolls tracks that are the real enemy the love songs to jewelry and the oides about tryign to get laid at the club.
