It’s aggressive and it’s progressive and it’s a big thick sound for sure. “The band’s latest release “Amplify” debuted at the top of the Billboard reggae chart. It was named one of the 10 best reggae records for 2008 at iTunes where a reviewer writes that lead singer and songwriter Elliot Martin “writes some of the most gorgeous melodies in all of modern reggae music. “”Amplify” is the band’s first album since the departure of co-founder Kevin Kinsella who formerly shared lead vocals and songwriting with Martin. By then the band had survived the cancer death of bassist Scott Palmer in June 2006 and Martin’s surgery for throat polyps. He was diagnosed with the polyps in 2006 and had the surgery this year. The changes have made John Brown’s Body a different group.

The room at the Wet Bar downstairs from The Page on Hanover Street was not packed to capacity but it was a healthy turnout for a winter weeknight. Guests gradually trickled down the stairs and bobbed their heads to the beat some moving to the dance floor as the night progressed. It’s a testament to the universality of reggae that it has pervaded even the frosty seaports of Northern New England. People are just like `You should have been doing this a long time ago. ‘" The singer acknowledges that diehard fans such as those who bought tickets for his Mississauga show this Saturday at the One Love Reggae Music Festival still want to hear the cover tunes. The performer got his start in church and has always included a gospel segment in his concerts.
