INFRMATIN: (760) 602-2012 Beginnings: Quetzal Flores 35 grew up around music but it wasn't until his mid-20s – when he met master musician Lorenzo Martinez – that he began to develop the style and sound of Quetzal. Martinez told him he needed to write Mexican music and literally put the instruments in his hands. The Latin alternative band Flores plays everything from boleros and folk to blues rock and son – a Cuban style music. “(Martinez) gave me the instruments and the knowledge and the history and it started changing the way I was playing the things I was thinking and the things I was writing” said Flores who wanted to use his talent to send a positive message to East Los Angeles. Flores said Martha Gonzalez “was a perfect match in developing what I think is a balanced sound. ”Sound: Quetzal's musical style is a hybrid of sounds that stem from the members' experiences… ”Los Pinguos was the only Latin band to perform and after making it to the finals in Las Vegas it secured the audience vote and won the contest. Its music has appeared on “The Shield” “The L Word” and is featured in “Imagining Argentina” starring Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson. Sound: Los Pinguos combines Latin rhythms with rock reggae and gypsy styles using Spanish guitars a Cuban tres Peruvian cajón (box-drum) and harmonizing vocal. “There are songs with different rhythms but the sound is really what is unique” Buono said.
