In fact Bob Marley himself first played Brooklyn in 1971 returning to New York a total of eight times before his last tour in 1980. Still there’s something to be said for a young group of New Yorkers drawn to a style of music invented on a tiny Caribbean island 40-odd years ago. Maybe it’s Bob’s legacy maybe it’s the power of reggae music itself or a combination of the two–but the fact remains that Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is a reggae band with a very long name from New York and a damn fine one at that. Blending the melodic structure of roots reggae with the modern dub sound (emphasizing drum and bass lines) Giant Panda expresses the feel-good vibes of reggae with astonishing clarity and the unbridled passion so often found in the genre… In fact Bob Marley himself first played Brooklyn in 1971 returning to New York a total of eight times before his last tour in 1980. Logan Bell says that the transition from cover band to New Zealand phenomenon was remarkably smooth. “I think [playing] the covers was a case of the band coming together and sharing a common thing” he says. “We all grew up with reggae music our parents listened to it and we really took to it. The covers thing was a way of grounding us—the guys were budding songwriters but none of us had done an album. We got our wings from doing the tribute thing and gained our confidence. It was a really natural transition. Not quite as natural a transition has been navigating the trappings of stardom when you share a band with your dad Logan admits.

The Liberian civil war and ECMG’s role in the conflict was of great concern to the Gambian people since a substantial number of Gambian soldiers were sent to the war front. As the fighting intensified people wondered what had happened to their sons and brothers sent there. It was reported that a day before their departure for Liberia young Gambian soldiers were dancing to reggae music little did they perceive at the time the danger that lay ahead. They were made to believe that they were simply going on a peace mission. The PDIS party which meticulously monitored the scene in a press release argued that those who were entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the destiny of nations and peoples should be persons of honour and compassion who would not put nations on a war footing and close their eyes to the sure road to peace. PDIS indicted the heads of states for wining and dining in lavishly decorated hotels only to plan how to send the sons of their fellow citizens to their graves. They stated that history will indict all those who betray the aspirations of their peoples.
