‘utameni’ – unforgettable experience
Jamaica Gleaner – Dec 30, 2007
Jamaica Today is memorable for a cross-section of visitors. In this village Bob Marley is depicted and pan chicken and pork are sold to the side of a stage for concerts and ‘Passa Passa’ dances where we are taught a few steps. The background to the stage is a huge mural showing the expansive range of cities where reggae music has travelled. A point of interest on the wall-to-wall mural is a Black Star Line ship. The first of its kind in Jamaica the utameni Experience is welcome and the minor hiccups such as the explanation of the fretwork as one method of communication among slaves is almost forgivable. ne plus of the villages is the willingness of the citizens to share samples of the foods they ate and brought as much as the history of how certain trees made their way from far away lands to Jamaica. Food samples include sweets from the Chinese village; tamarind balls from the Indians; solar-dried pineapple from the Tainos; grater cake from the Spanish and Bustamante jaw bone from the Jamaica Today village.

From their 1977 runaway success with the single Two Sevens Clash and album of the same name for veteran producer Joe Gibbs the group has helped to give definition to the sound and musical style now referred to globally as “roots rock reggae”. In fact Hill in particular and the group in general became the personification of the success of the sub-categorisation of that form of reggae commonly called “culture music”. “Joseph (Hill) did a nice work a really nice work right. But Joseph did too much work Joseph did need some rest. because is 203 shows it is said that him do per year. That is too much work bearing in mind that the big lights dem a bun yuh out pon stage” Kenneth Dayes told Yesterday’s Notes.

Seattle Times – Dec 30, 2007
He was the essence of cool the embodiment of eternal youth. Every song was perfect. As a music critic it was the kind of night you live for. ld guys still rock — Back when rock started in the ’50s we never dreamed rock stars would continue when their youth was gone. But we’re learning that true artists never quit musicians never stop. That lesson was brought home again and again this year with memorable concerts by Bob Seger Rod Stewart Eric Clapton Billy Joel Van Halen zzy sbourne and especially the incomparable Neil Young… Lily Allen at the Showbox — Discovering new artists is always a thrill but when it’s somebody as sprightly silly sexy and talented as Lily Allen it’s especially delightful. At her March concert at the Showbox she was frank irreverent and irresistible in both word and song. Backed by a tight seven-piece reggae band (including horns) her songs were fresh bracing full of youthful energy and sass. She drank and smoked and flirted onstage but it was all part of her character her spitfire charm. Come back soon Lily!6. The Saturday Knights at SXSW — South by Southwest the annual music-industry spring break in sunny Austin Texas every March is always a kick. But this year’s was especially memorable because one of the bands that stood out among the thousands there was Seattle’s own Saturday Knights who presented a spirited playful snarky set at a little club called Latitude 30.
