Van Halen tour is riding a wave of raves
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Nov 29, 2007
When Roth first auditioned in the early ’70s for a pre-Van Halen band called Mammoth Alex and Eddie were unimpressed by Roth’s free-wheeling renditions of Cream and Grand Funk Railroad standards according to Ian Christe author of “Everybody Wants Some: The Van Halen Saga. Fatefully Alex and Eddie — who became one of rock’s most admired guitarists in Van Halen’s heyday — changed their minds after Roth formed his own band the Red Ball Jets and faced off with Mammoth at a battle-of-the-bands competition. “It was never about the music for him it was about the show” Eddie Van Halen recalls in Christe’s book. “He was like an emcee a clown. He was great at what he did. It’s amusing that the Dave Clark Five’s “Glad All ver” was the song that inspired the classically trained Dutch-born Van Halens to form their first rock band after seeing the British rock band in the ’60s on “The Ed Sullivan Show. The legendary founders of one of hard rock’s most successful bands — with sales of more than 75 million albums — have joined Roth and Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie’s son on bass) for a highly anticipated reunion tour that resurrects such classic songs as “Eruption” “Running With the Devil” “You Really Got Me” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” “Dance the Night Away” “Jump” “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher… “(Van Halen) filled the arena with hard rock energy rarely generated since well the band’s previous forays” gushed USA Today. Seattle fans can only hope Van Halen lives up to the hype. pening act is reggae singer and actor Ky-Mani Marley the second-youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley. Ky-Mani stars in his own reality show “Living the Life of Marley” which made its debut in ctober on BET J. Marley performs songs from his new album “Radio. Ian Fisher tributeIf any Seattle rocker of the Van Halen era came close to the flamboyant showmanship of Roth it was the late Ian Fisher who died in late ctober in Thailand. As leader of The Cowboys one of the top bands on Seattle’s sizzling pre-grunge power pop scene of the late 1970s and early ’80s Fisher was a rock star even if he never actually became one.

Any great story regardless of what it is — whether it’s music movies books whatever — has these elements: It has a build; it builds up to something a moment of tension or height. When it hits the height on [my] album it’s ‘Roc Boys [(And the Winner Is... ' If you ask anyone that's what I'm known for. "You try to tell a great story with the music" Jay added of how albums should be sequenced. "You don't want to be here and there a fast-tempo [song] that has nothing to do with this record you know? nce again on Rihanna’s album ‘Sell Me Candy’ and ‘Say It’ they both have this reggae sense [so] they go together. When you listen to it it’s not abrupt. It’s not this fast loud dance song then it’s a slow ballad then it takes you back. [It's] almost like a DJ would do.

John Goddard Staff Reporter Jani Lauzon relaxed and let the music flow. For eight years she had put her singing career on hold to give birth and devote time to her daughter. As a new mother she could no longer push herself to the level the music industry demands she says but when she returned to the studio she refused simply to go back to old pressures. "I wanted to really fall in love again with creating melody for the sake of where the song melodically wanted to go" she said recently from her Toronto home "as opposed to trying to fit into some kind of preconceived formula or potential sales or market. "And I found the best way for me to access melody and the simplicity and strength of melody was with my hand drum. "Lauzon is in the running for best female traditional artist at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards gala tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre. n second thought the whole band might need some sleep. It comes as no surprise if you travel to Mexico to shoot a music video the same week your singer gets married. De Leon (graduate-anthropology) and his bandmates left for Tlaxcala Mexico on ct. 14 with the intention of shooting a music video for their song “Angels and Devils” off of their debut album The Sacred and Profane. For De Leon getting married was also on the agenda. Needless to say it was a chaotic week he said… “My parents played a lot of oldies in the house” De Leon said. “Then when I turned about 12 [I listened to] a lot of punk rock. The band played shows for six years including shows with post-hardcore band At The Drive-In. “Those guys were always around in Long Beach and the L. scene in ‘98 or ‘99″ De Leon said.
