Norwich Evening News – Sep 28, 2007
As part of the market there will be live entertainment throughout the day on-stage in the amphitheatre outside the Forum. Crowds will be entertained by a live two-hour set from DJ Thomsta (Kiss 105-108 FM) playing the latest hip hop and R ‘n’ B. There will also be a live performance from acclaimed Reggae Band Darien Prophecy calypso beats from Luton-based Steel Band NXT Generation and Norwich’s own Hip-Hop collective Spoken Drama. The launch continues into the evening when guests will be entertained by local and national speakers and performers including one of the UK’s finest black comedians Curtis Walker. Sean Whyte co-ordinator of Norfolk Black History Month said: ?The launch officially opens a month of music lectures discussions workshops dance drama comedy visual arts film and theatre. ?With more than 60 events taking place throughout the county there is something for everyone. ? During the course of the month look out for example for African Simba at the Mustard Lounge… And at UEA on November 9 it’s Lee Perry. Some call him a genius others claim he’s certifiably insane a madman. The truth is he’s both but more importantly Lee Perry is a towering figure in reggae – a producer ?mixologist? and songwriter who along with King Tubby helped shape the sound of dub and made reggae music such a powerful part of the pop music world. All the BHM events have been organised by a partnership of community groups arts organisations venues and statutory bodies co-ordinated by the Norwich and Norfolk Racial Equality Council (NNREC) and supported by Norfolk Education & Action for Development (NEAD). Punknews.org – Sep 28, 2007
So when the often unpredictable Bad Brains played the first of their sold out two-night stint at Slim’s in San Francisco on September 23 2007 both of these values were put to the test. It’s pretty crystal that the Bad Brains have changed. Where they used to be punkers that played rasta-influenced reggae they now seem to be rastas that dip into punk. As was evident by the show this change of poles has modified the Bad Brains’ music but not necessarily made it diluted. used to leap around the stage like a court jester gone mad he now stands in one spot ceaselessly grinning… It’s pretty crystal that the Bad Brains have changed. His unique yippty-yap-yappity-yip vocals only come out for rare brief cameos while his natural thicker voice soars over the music instead of zapping through it like the former.
